He was predeceased by: his parents, Jack Cates and Geraldine Cates; and his brother-in-law Randy Mead. He is survived by: his spouses, Karen Hoffman and Amy; his children, Suzen Garrison, Lisa Chestnut and Jason Cates; his stepchildren, Duncan Irvine (Julie), Daniel Irvine, Zachary Irvine (Frances) and Hanna Winters (Dalin); and his siblings, Gordon Cates (Martha), Michael Cates (Donna), Barbara Mead and Rinda Galarneau (Gordon). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations in Gary's name may be made to the Friends of the Basin Library or the Basin City Arts Center.
