He was predeceased by: his parents, William F. Backus and Jeanette Studebaker Backus; and his brothers, Steve and Roger. He is survived by: his son Daniel W. Backus, Jr.; his siblings, Kay Coiner (Gary), Glenn Backus and Stanley Backus (Sandy); and his grandchildren, McKenzie and Kyler. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
