He was predeceased by: his wife Janet M. Sams; his daughter Deborah L. Kennedy; his parents, Shirley W. Sams and Millie J. Vance Sams; and his siblings, Patsy Caltrider and Bob Sams.

He is survived by: his grandson Brian Jones (Jessica Jones); his great grandchildren, Kaeli Vannoy and Taylor Jones of Vienna, WV; his sister Ida Mae Carney; and his close friend Evelyn Wiblin.
