He was predeceased by: his parents, Daniel Armstrong McDermott and Ethel Marguerite McDermott (Griffin); his wife Carol (Mayo); and his brother Tom McDermott. He is survived by: his brother Peter McDermott (Esther) of Powhatan Virginia; his nieces and nephews, Scott (Charina), Lesley Kracke (Matt), Lynn McHugh (Patrick), Laura Cornell (Ryan) and Echert; his great-nephews, Steve McDermott and Greg McDermott (Patti); and his great-niece Diana Bonnell (Dan).

Due to Covid-19, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
