He was predeceased by: his wife Ruby "Lanelle" Vandegrift; his son Richard Douglas Vandegrift; his brother Paul Vandegrift; his niece Edna Boggs; his nephew John Vandegrift; and his daughter Victoria Lane Vandegrift.

He is survived by: his grandson Richard Douglas Vandegrift, II; his daughter-in-law Kathy Hutchins-Vandegrift; his stepgranddaughter Brandy Shrader; his niece Darlene Carter; and his nephew Paul Vandegrift, Jr..
