He is survived by: his former wife Elsie Almiria Gray; his children, Gary Conrad Shorter, Jr. (Jenny), Robert Carson Shorter and Jennifer Rebecca Freeman (Chris); his grandchildren, Riley Catherine Freeman and Sophie Elizabeth Shorter; his close friend Lucky; and his sister Brenda Carol Stover. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews.
