He was predeceased by: his parents, Giles Robert and Ethel Belcher Surface; and his siblings, Helen King, Maxine Shrader, Betty Barnette, Danny Surface and Roger Surface.
He is survived by: his wife Betty Carter Surface of Rock Camp, WV; his children, Robert A. "Rusty" Surface II (Gwen) of Buckhannon, WV, Jane Martin (Jim) of Sandlick, WV and Sherree Farmer of Sandlick, WV; his stepson Shannon Hall (Teresa) of Salem, VA; his brother David Surface (Connie) of Bluewell, WV; his niece Brenda Shrader; and his grandchildren, Robbie Surface, Sara Surface, Josh Cicero, Logan Shannon, Wyatt Surface, Ron Martin, Amy Martin, Katy Martin, Jeremiah Farmer, Derrick Hall and Adrianna Hall. He is also survived by ten great-grandchildren.
