He was predeceased by: his parents, Ted Shumate and Laura Bower Shumate; and his siblings, Pauline, Roy, Freda, Roland, Frank and Carl.

He is survived by: his wife Nina Beatrice "Bea" Meadows Shumate; and his daughters, Brenda Carbaugh, Anita Herzog (Mike) and Sandy Carroll (Gene). He is also survived by Eight grandchildren; Thirteen great-grandchildren; One great-great-grandchild; Several nieces and nephews.
