He was predeceased by: his parents, William Ellis Bowen and Violet Elizabeth Clemson Bowen; and his brother William E. Bowen, II. He is survived by: his wife Julia "Jitter" Lambert Bowen; his children, David A. Bowen, Jr. (Krista) of Denver, NC and Debra A. Dick (Mark) of Lerona; his grandchildren, Elizabeth G. Syres (Shannon) of Pettry, Dakota Dick of Lerona and Shannon Smith of Princeton; his great grandchildren, Eli and Braxton Smith of Pettry; and his brother James Bowen (Anna Leah) of Lovern. He is also survived by Several nieces, nephews and in-laws.
