He was predeceased by: his wife Bonnie Lou Pettrey of Prichard; his parents, James Oliver Pettrey Sr. and Sybil Pettrey of Princeton; his son-in-law Timothy D. Doss of Fort Gay; and his great grandchild Aidan M. White of Kenova, WV.
He is survived by: his sister Jerlene Harvey of Princeton, WV; his children, Theresa A. Shepard of Prichard, Susie Doss (late Timothy) of Fort Gay, Larry Shepard (Pearline) of Prichard, Lawton Shepard (Kelly) of Georgetown, KY and Marie Mathis of Prichard; his grandchildren, Cynthia Smiley (Philip), Rebecca White (William), Stephen Shepard (Aubrey), Natashia Ramey (Brian), Amanda Fitzpatrick (Shane), Katie Newsome, Holly Walls (Dustin), C. J. Shepard (Brooke), Timothy Doss (Candice), John Shepard, Tristan Shepard, Kristian Maynard and Nathan Shepard; his close friends, Chic Thompson of Fort Gay, Libby Shaffer and Billy Lester of Princeton; and his son-in-law David Mathis of Kenova. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
