He is survived by: his wife Nannie Bates; his sons, Carroll, Bates Jr. and Shawn Riley; his siblings, Raymond Bates, Frankie Bates, Dale Bates (Maggie) and Pam Lee (Cricket); his sister-in-law Penny Leport; his grandchildren, Nicole Day (Charles Kormink), Steven Young, Kaden and Whitney Mentz; and his adoptive daughters, Courtney, Auston Gravely, Lorie, Critter Gravely and Robie Smith. He is also survived by many other nieces and nephews.
