He is survived by: his father Paul W. Merkel Jr. (Parkersburg); his son Jacob Paul Merkel; his brother Jacob Smith (Angela); his stepsiblings, Brock Guthrie (Brooke) and Jennifer Wessel; his niece Jessica Smith; and his nephews, Brenden and Camden Smith. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
