He was predeceased by: his parents, Luther Mote and Annie East Thorne; his daughter Ruth Ann Thorne; and his siblings, James Thorne, Luther Thorne, Jr. and Kathleen Butler.

He is survived by: his sisters, Margaret Rhodes, Elva Butler, Virginia Thomas, Louise Hayes and Beatrice Fletcher; his wife Elizabeth Marguette "Liz" Butler Thorne; his children, Judy Faye Kuhn (Roger) and Jimmy Lee Thorne (Claudette); and his brother Leon "Skip" Thorne. He is also survived by five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
