He was predeceased by: his parents, Oran Winton and Mildred Marie Laverty McKinney; and his father-in-law Jack Lambert. He is survived by: his wife Laura; his son Cameron Scott McKinney (Jessica Breedlove-McKinney) of Alum Creek; his grandchildren, Jordan Joudry (Corey) of Iqaluit, Ian Scott McKinney and Sarah Rylee McKinney; his brothers, Robert McKinney of Pineville and Daniel McKinney (Marcia) of Key Rock; his brother-in-law Jack Lambert, Jr.; his nieces and nephews, Sarah Robinson (Adam), Carmen McKinney (Kara McCoy), Morgan McKinney (Patrick Corcoran) and Stuart McKinney; and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Greta Wistuk, Arrie McKinney and Solomon Oran Corcoran.
