He was predeceased by: his parents, James Mason Harper and Ruth Naomi Daniels Harper; his brothers, Roy Lee Harper and Merritt Glenn Harper; and his wives, Maureen Avril Harper and Vicki Cheryl Harper.

He is survived by: his close friend Dolores Wallace; his children, Ruth Sofield and Robert Harper; his stepchildren, Laura McVicker and Jonathan Malcolm; and his grandchildren, Audrey Sofield, C. J. McVicker, Samantha Lewis, Steven McVicker II and Stephanie McVicker.
