He was predeceased by: his parents, Guy L. Nichols and June Gorrell Nichols; and his daughter Tanya Nichols Woods (Jim Woods). He is survived by: his wife C. Sue Miles-Nichols; his daughter Tracy Connell Hancock (Christopher Burns); his stepdaughter Jane Cecil (Matt Brengman); his siblings, Roger P. Nichols, June Elaine Morrell and Rosemary Valentine; and his grandchildren, Kerry, Kathleen, James Woods, Meghan Hancock, Sarah and Benjamin Brengman.
