He was predeceased by: his parents, Evelyn Matilda Grimes Merhaut and Albert John Merhaut. He is survived by: his wife Patricia Ann McCafferty; his children, Robert Lawrence Merhaut (Lisa) and Mary Beth Vultaggio (Anthony); and his grandchildren, Robert Matthew Merhaut, Ryan Merhaut, Kara Lyons, Jenna Leight (Christopher), Amanda White (David), Ryan Wilson and Dylan Merhaut. He is also survived by great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, January 15th 2025 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the St. Agnes Catholic Church (106 S Duke St, Shepherdstown, WV 25443). A funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 15th 2025 at 1:00 PM at the same location.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Agnes Catholic Church or Blue Ridge Hospice.
