He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Edgar "Mutt" Mercer and Ruth Floyd Mercer of Mannington; his grandparents, Elmer and Malissa Floyd; his wife Karen Prowant Mercer; his children, Beverly, Israel VanScyoc of Wadestown, Sandra, Michael Parenti of Metz, Raymond and Tammy Mercer of Mannington; his grandchildren, Levi VanScyoc (Emily) of Hundred, Hammer VanScyoc (Alyssa) of White House, TN and Madeline VanScyoc of Wadestown; his great grandchildren, Kelsey and Jameson Watson; his sisters, Rose Williams (Al) of Wooster, OH and Betty Potoczny of Farmington; his siblings-in-law, Russell Prowant, Madeline, Joe Potoczny and Harold Ballinger; and his great grandchild Waylon Israel Joseph VanScyoc.
