He was predeceased by: his parents, Dr. Harold H. Howell and Madeline Berry Howell; and his sisters, Betty Howell, Nancy Young and Jean Howell Dolan.

He is survived by: his grandson Harry; his wife Onia Jane Howell; his son Dr. Harold H. "Kip" Howell, III (Deanna); his grandchildren, Harold "Harry" Howell, IV of Clearwater and Meredith M. Howell of Huntington; and his siblings-in-law, Marilyn Miller of Charleston and Mike Dickens (Tyree) of Sebring, Florida.

“Sonny was a friend/employer of my late father-in-law, Emil Wills. Each year at Christmas time Sonny would bring Emil to our house in Huntington with toys for my sons, Arthur, Jr. and Gregory. Emil liked to play Santa Clause and Sonny was a good friend who brought Emil and his gifts to Huntington. Sonny was a good and generous man. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
