He was predeceased by: his parents, James Garnet Thompson and Georgia Phyllis Hypes Thompson; his wife Lela Wanda Thompson; his son Eric Joseph "Joey" Thompson; and his siblings, William Richard Thompson, Sandra Burkes, Charlotte Dehaven, Mark Thompson and Wayne Thompson.
He is survived by: his sons, James "Buddy" Thompson, Jr. and Marvin Thompson (Stephanie); his grandson James Jared Thompson (Megan Cox) of Bluefield; and his siblings, Judy Wiley, Gary Thompson, Carol Whittaker, Fanny Cox, Clyde Thompson (Marlene), Sue Hurley, Tammy Adams and Joe Thompson (Lisa).
Jimmy chose to donate his body to Marshall University John C. Edwards School of Medicine.
