He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles William "Bud" and Grace Elizabeth Abernathy (Reed); his son Brian Dale Abernathy; and his brother Charles Richard "Dick" Abernathy. He is survived by: his daughters, Rebecca Ann "Becky" Galloway (Lamar) of Hickory, NC and Darla Jean Swiger (Steve) of New Creek, WV; his grandchildren, Brianna Amtower, Bryan Amtower (Brittney), Jacob Sommerville (Cassiana) and Joshua Sommerville (Bethany); and his sisters, Thelma J. Knotts (Cliff) of Elk Garden, WV and Dorothy E. Schonley of Oakland, MD.. He is also survived by his 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
