He was predeceased by: his parents, Willie Briers and Mildred Cheetham Briers; and his brothers, Bill Briers and David Briers. He is survived by: his wife Martha Bigony Briers; his children, Thomas F. Briers Jr. (Susan), Tamara Briers Holterman (Tom), Tina Briers Shanklin (Gary), Matthew C. Briers (Karen), Charles G. Steward and John Charlton Briers (Kristen); his grandchildren, Jenna Briers Owen, Thomas J. Briers, Melissa Sue Offenhauser, Benjamin Goff, Kyle Shanklin, Jessica Briers, Keegan Briers and Callen Briers; and his sister Joan Briers Monroe.
