He was predeceased by: his parents, Nelsie E. Ayers Gunter Hicks and John Lemley Gunter; his stepfather Howard Hicks; and his siblings, Lemley Edward Gunter and Elizabeth "Betty" Richmond Davis.
He is survived by: his siblings, Maxine Maxwell of Athens, WV, Lucille Williams, Patty Osborne (Tom) of Shady Spring, James Gunter (Harriet) of Sandstone, Dallas Forrest Gunter of Hinton and Bobby Gunter (Norma) of Hinton; and his sister-in-law Anna Gunter (Lem) of Narrows, VA.
