He was predeceased by: his parents, Nelsie E. Ayers Gunter Hicks and John Lemley Gunter; his stepfather Howard Hicks; and his siblings, Lemley Edward, Johnny Dale Gunter and Elizabeth "Betty" Richmond Davis.
He is survived by: his son Stanley Gunter of Daniels, WV; his siblings, Maxine Maxwell of Athens, WV, Lucille Williams, Patty Osborne (Tom) of Shady Spring, WV, James Gunter (Harriet) of Sandstone, WV and Bobby Gunter (Norma) of Hinton; and his sister-in-law Anna Gunter (Lem) of Narrows, VA. He is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.
