He was predeceased by: his parents, Jethro Smith and Esther Smith (Merritt); his wife Betty Jane Smith; his son David Gaver; his brother Gene Smith; and his grandson Michael Asbury.

He is survived by: his children, Robin Asbury (Billy), Betty Smith (Gary), Annette Johnson (Charles), John Gaver III (Robin), Perry Gaver and Helen Seidel (Larry); his siblings, Carliel "Smitty" Smith, Arty Anders, Penny Anders (Reds), Chester Smith (Gloria), Gary Smith (Betty) and Ronald Smith (Joan); his sister-in-law Nina Smith; and his grandson Mark D. Smith (Melanie). He is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
