He was predeceased by: his parents, Cecil Nelson and Merle Dempsey; his daughter Dreama Nelson; and his siblings, Kermit Nelson, Leonard Nelson, Shirley Martin, Sandy McCloud, Julie "Pinky" Ellis, Zinnia Vance and Bonnie Holstein.
He is survived by: his wife Rebecca Nelson; his children, Tonya Nelson, Sherry Williams (Paul), Heather Criswell, James Wesley Nelson and Thomas Nelson (Katrina); and his sisters, Carol Dempsey, Shelvy Holt, Susie Harmon and Bessie Nieves. He is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
