He was predeceased by: his parents, Kenneth Smith and Beatrice Hunt Smith. He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth Ann Karickhoff Smith; his children, Barbara Violette (James) of Port Charlotte, FL, Diana Butcher (Tim) of Glenville and Bruce Smith (Susie) of Poca, WV; and his grandchildren, Brian Kennedy, Sara Kennedy, Kristina Tackett, Andrew Butcher (Ashley), Matthew Butcher (Chelsea), Catherine Zdanek (Zach), Grant Smith (Lori) and Blake Smith (Jennifer). He is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the FBC Cancer Fund, Attn: Susie Sheets,.

“So sorry to hear of “Smokey’s” (as Stemple knew him) passing. He and John were friends. My wife and I were neighbors of Kenneth (Sr,) and “Bid” on South Main Street for years and having grown up in North Philippi, I remember well “Sarge” and Mrs. Karickhoff. I also remember Bruce playing basketball for the Battlers. Condolences to all.”
