He was predeceased by: his parents, Darrell Franklin Thompson and Sarah Marie Metz Thompson; his grandchildren, Michael Thompson and Amber Thompson; and his siblings, Bill Thompson, Randall "Chip" Thompson, Pat Whitesel, Sherry Stewart and Shirley Lemon.
He is survived by: his wife Sue Thompson; his children, Kim Johnson (Mike), Mark Thompson (Mona) and Shane Thompson (Christine); his siblings, Mike Thompson (Sandy) of North Carolina and Karen Woods (Ray); his grandchildren, Jessica Rice (Eric), Jennifer Smarr (Brian), Andrea Hilton (Beau) and Allison Mayse (Billy); his stepgrandchildren, Cody Cool, Dustin Cool, Tyler Cool and Gracie Davis; and his great grandchildren, Cole Tonkin, Kenneth Cogar, Easton Rice, Brodi Smarr, Mason Smarr, Aubree Thompson, Aspen Rice, Gunner Hilton, Preston Smarr, Case Hilton, Jolie Hilton, Ariel Smith, Remi Hilton and Aurora Mayse. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
