He is survived by: his wife Deborah; his stepchildren, William Thomas Cates (Misty) and Myna Elizabeth Smith (Robert); his grandchildren, Tristan, Lauren, Elise, Eli, Kendall, Morgan, Lindsay and Benjamin; and his siblings, Michael McAteer (Peggy), Ellen Snyder (Ron), Cecily Enos (Ken), Davitt McAteer (Kathryn), Molly Kipperman (Mark) and Timothy McAteer (Deborah). He is also survived by 56 nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
