He was predeceased by: his parents, Esper Crawford Shafer and Mary Myrtle Elmore Shafer; his daughter Tessa Shafer; and his siblings, Goldie Burdette, Rosa Edna Withrow (Butch), Ray, Clifford, Ben, Joe, Jack Esper Jr., Ord and John.

He is survived by: his siblings, Melvin, Sam Shafer, Mary Bell Weese and Maxine Huffman; and his grandson Kameron Shafer.
