He was predeceased by: his parents, Leonard Theodore Shaffer and Cora Pauline Elmore Shaffer; his wife Carolyn Shaffer; his daughter Caroline Shaffer; and his siblings, John Shaffer and Wanda Cantrell.

He is survived by: his siblings, Darrell Shaffer, Jerry Shaffer, Tonya Barnes, Charlotte Shaffer and Dreama Steiner. He is also survived by 14 nieces and nephews.
