He was predeceased by: his wife Connie Terry Johnston; his parents, Alvin Willis and Elsie Smith Johnston; and his brother Jack Johnston. He is survived by: his daughters, Nancy Sands (Jim) of Charleston and Tammy Gilliland (Steve) of Circleville, OH; his grandchildren, Jerad Gilliland (Kacy), Phillip Sands (Raven) and Regan Gallo (Jorge); his great grandchildren, Jordan, Garrett and Georgia; and his siblings, Carolyn Sue Curry (Fred) of Marmet and Jim Johnston (Sherry) of Winston Salem, NC..
