He was predeceased by: his parents, Shirley H. Surface, Sr. and Bethel Surface; and his parents-in-law, Loatha Joyce Strickland and Richard Lewis Strickland. He is survived by: his wife Nina Sue "Susie" Surface of Charleston, WV; his sons, Jeffrey Wayne Surface (Lisa) of Charleston and William Gary Surface of Charleston, WV; his brother Shirley H. "Crow" Surface, Jr. (Laura) of Greenwood, SC.; his brothers-in-law, Richard H. Strickland (Linda) of Elkview, WV, Ronald Stephen "Stevie" Strickland (Teresa) of Bancroft, WV and Roger Dale Strickland (Angil) of Hurricane, WV; and his grandchildren, Ty, Krisene (Phil), Kassie (Tom), Jordan (Maggie), Faith, Jackson and Liam. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Salvation Army or the Children's Home Society of West Virginia in honor of Bill.
