He was predeceased by: his parents, Virgil Nelson and Ruby Nelson. He is survived by: his wife Nancy; his children, David Nelson (Shawna), Amy Stephens (Mark) and Wendy Beasley (Justin); his grandchildren, Hunter, Walker Woods, Bailey Stainbrook (Cory), Abby Nelson and Nathaniel Beasley; his great grandchildren, River Woods and Amelia Stainbrook; and his siblings, Lawrence Nelson (Patsy) and Jane Smith (Jim).

Virgil donated his body for Medical Research to West Virginia University.
