She was predeceased by: her parents, Clyde Phifer and Alice Phifer (Wherle); and her siblings, Clyde Phifer, Jr., Frederick "Freddie" Wherle, Fred Phifer, Ella Phifer, Alberta Ray and Claudia Phifer.
She is survived by: her husband Alva "Thurston" Carter; her daughters, Andrea Carter of Charleston and Jennifer Foster (Richard) of Archdale, NC; her granddaughters, Sydnee Ward of Charleston, Haley and Alanah Foster of Archdale, NC; and her brother Jerome Phifer of Raleigh, NC. She is also survived by nieces and nephews; family and friends.
