He was predeceased by: his parents, Maurice Gatens and Emogene Stone Gatens; his former wife Linda Gatens; and his brother Francis Gatens. He is survived by: his wife Patricia Gatens; his children, Danielle Mullins (Wes) of Dunbar and Anthony Gatens of Charleston; his sister Patricia Belcher of Charleston; his granddaughters, Tara Thomas (Scott) and Phoebe Gatens; and his great grandchildren, Zander and Avery Thomas.
