He was predeceased by: his mother Louise Virginia Greenwalt Smallwood (Greenwalt); his son Joey Smallwood; his former wife Judy Penwell; and his half-sister Judy Saylor. He is survived by: his father Walter Francis Smallwood, Jr.; his sons, Michael Smallwood (Melissa), Jeffrey Smallwood, John Virts and Joshua Virts (Sarah); his siblings, Phyllis Dillow (Donald), Jackie Gore (Michael) and Walter "Peanie" Smallwood, III (Nancy); and his former wife Irene Powell. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James Catholic Church.
