He was predeceased by: his parents, Eddie Oates and Mabel L. Oates (Wimer); his grandson Zaiden Oates; and his brother-in-law Gary Ellis. He is survived by: his wife Debra Oates (Kemp); his sons, Gary Dwayne Oates of Virginia, Joshua Lee Oates of Virginia, Zachery Robert Oates of Petersburg, WV, Matthew Lee Zimmerer (Ashley) of Harrisonburg, VA and James Andrew Zimmerer of Annapolis, MD; his grandchildren, Zillah C. Oates, Noah Harris, Holden Zimmerer and Austin Oates; and his siblings, Jerry Oates (Dottie) of Petersburg, WV, Bill Oates (Kathy) of Kentucky, Jimmy Oates of Amherst, VA, Beverly Ellis of Suffolk, VA and Darlene Evans (Delmas) of Petersburg, WV. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
