He was predeceased by: his parents, Simmie Atkins and Kathleen Atkins (Hansbrough); and his sister Ellen Lenzi. He is survived by: his wife Sharon Rose Atkins (Nelson); his stepdaughters, Tammy Long (Teddy) of Dayton, VA and Juanita Crider (Joey) of Knoxville, TN; his sons, Jimmie Lee (Missy) of Jacksonville, FL and Doug Atkins of Jacksonville, FL; his stepson Shannon Nelson (Sandy) of Grottoes, VA; his siblings, Betty Washburn of Springfield, OR, Geraldine Borror (Emmett) of Bridgewater, VA, Juanita Lambert (Calvin) of Bridgewater, VA, Judy Atkins of Crimora, VA, Dewey Atkins (Denise) of Dayton, VA, Ricky Atkins (Judy) of Keezeltown, VA, Roger Atkins of Dayton, VA and Jessie Atkins (Bonnie) of Broadway, VA; and his close friends, Brenda Pitsenbarger, Diana Nelson, Gavin Nesselrodt and Kristen. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
