Richard Norris Canterbury Obituary
Richard Norris Canterbury, 82, of Mercer County's Midway, WV, died Sunday, February 16, 2025 at Carrington Place at Botetourt Commons in Daleville, VA.
He was born in Berwind, WV on November 8, 1942 to the late Ralph K. Canterbury, Sr. and Evelyn Bird Canterbury.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph K. Canterbury, Jr.; sister, Linda Kay Cox; nephew, Robert Haynes; and brothers-in-laws, Claude Haynes and Gordie Gibson.
He is survived by his sister, Rena Haynes Gibson of Stuarts Draft, VA; nieces, Rebecca Elliott and husband Mike of Bristow, VA, Virginia Cadd Grissom and husband Israel of Patrick County, VA, Lisa Cox of Nashville, TN, Shari Cox Parker and husband Mark; nephews, Gary Haynes and wife Kathy of Staunton, VA, Robert Canterbury and wife Kim of Troutville, VA, and David Canterbury; grandnieces, Ashleigh Elliott Iszard and husband Alex of Manassas, VA, Samantha and Elizabeth Parker of Lascassus, TN, Courtney Canterbury Ashby and husband Mark of Troutville, VA, Morgan Canterbury Bowles and husband Zach, Krissie Haynes, Kimberly Haynes, and Samantha Cadd Montgomery ; grandnephews, Travis Cadd, and Phillip Haynes; numerous great-great nieces and nephew; brother-in-law, Ray Cox of Murfreesboro, TN; sister-in-law, Diane Canterbury of Jerusalem, AR.
Mr. Canterbury was a 1960 graduate of Big Creek High School. He served in the United States Air Force for twelve years. He was a Vietnam War veteran and had received the Air Force Commendation Medal. He was a graduate of VWCC in 1975, and VPI with a B.A. Horticulture in 1977. He worked mostly as a wholesale greenhouse grower. He was an active volunteer and member at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bluefield, WV, was a member of the Knight of Columbus 4th Degree. He was a past member of Bluefield Virginia Memorial Post and VA District 9 Chapters of the VFW, and had memberships at Pocahontas Post 14 of the American Legion, and the DAV Chapter 31 in Princeton, WV.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where military honors will be provide by the Mercer County Veteran's Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour.
A private interment will occur after cremation at Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Charlotte, NC.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Bluefield Memorial Post VFW or to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
