He was predeceased by: his parents, Wilbur Smith and Virginia Smith Hudec (Cowden); and his sister Naoma Sassler (Smith). He is survived by: his stepfather Rudolph Hudec; his wife Karen Kay Smith (Dahlberg); his children, Travis Smith (Virginia) of Roanoke, VA, Samuel Smith of Albany, NY, James Merrick (Esther) of Waxhaw, NC, Ross Merrick (Danielle) of Honolulu, HI and Krista Gilson (Nathan) of Lancaster, SC; and his siblings, Neal Smith (Joan) of Wellsburg, WV, Ruth Brown of Wellsburg, WV and Jean Crago (Daniel) of Hickory, NC. He is also survived by eight grandchildren.
