He was predeceased by: his parents, Dooley Matney and Eva Wallace Matney; his wife Henrietta; and his siblings, Larry, Ronald Matney and Sherry Byrd.
He is survived by: his close friend Marty Dills; his children, Arlie Matney (Karen) of Berwind, WV, David "Hippy" Matney (Melissa) of Swords Creek, VA and Pastor Marsha Cox (Danny) of Allisonia, VA; and his sister Peggy Mitchell (Bobby) of Tazewell, VA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren.
