He was predeceased by: his parents, Mark Haymond Smith and Christine Bare Smith; his former wife Thelma Barnes Smith; his wife Betty Lee Pinnell Smith; and his brothers, Mark Smith, Herbert Smith and Robert Smith.

He is survived by: his sons, John Gregory (Elizabeth) and Stuart Edward (Cheryl); his stepchildren, Michael Scott Pinnell and Kathy Ann Pinnell Boone; his siblings, Jack Smith, Mary Ellen Raines and Ida Lee Gosik; and his grandchildren, Adam Kramer Smith, Rachel Christine Prouty, Nathan Glen Smith, Samuel Isaac Smith, Mijkalena Smith and Zebulon M. Smith. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.
