He was predeceased by: his parents, Leonard Kunkel and Elizabeth Kunkel (Paich); his wife Dianne; and his siblings, Joanne, Jeannie and Gary.

He is survived by: his children, Laura Newby, David Kunkel, Daniel Kunkel and Denise Bourassa; his brother Neil Kunkel; and his pet Abby. He is also survived by six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
