He was predeceased by: his parents, Fritz Haefner and Violet Haefner (Snyder); his wife Joyce Zieher July1; and his brother James. He is survived by: his daughters, Dixie Haefner and Vickie Hess (Rick); his grandchildren, Kyle Hess (Emma), Ryan Hess, Madison, Philip Hess (Cody Hess), Minneapolis and Corey Hess of Rochester, MN; his great grandchildren, Donald John Hess and Lucy Hess; his sisters, Joan Anderson and Barbara Reader; and his siblings-in-law, Don and Beatie Zieher. He is also survived by many nieces & nephews.
Per John's wishes his body was donated to the University of Minnesota Medical School.
