He was predeceased by: his parents, Raymond Ells and Jean Van Ells (Wimmer); his brother Jack Van Ells; his father-in-law Allen Vanderloop; and his sister-in-law Lori Vanderloop.

He is survived by: his wife Vickie Van Ells of Mary's Catholic Church; his daughters, Olivia Van Ells and Samantha Van Ells; his siblings, Mike Van Ells (Sharon), Lynn Tisler (Greg), Mary Van Ells and Jill (Jerry); his mother-in-law Shirley Vanderloop; and his siblings-in-law, Chris Baumann (Bruce), Scott Vanderloop, Cheryl (Tom), Loren Vanderloop (Stephanie), Cato, Eric Vanderloop and Green Bay. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Lakeshore Humane Society, Manitowoc.
