Maureen Anne Cunningham Obituary
Entered into eternal life on Monday, July 8, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at the age of 79. Resident of Wauwatosa, Maureen was the dedicated mother of Caroline Savage (Jason Snyder) and proud "Nana" to grandchildren Colum and Nora Savage-Snyder. Dear sister of Barbara (Dave) Wilson and Christine (Richard) Stark and aunt of Andrea Williams, Lindsey Schmitz, Ryan and Cory Heberlein.
Maureen's life centered around family, and she cherished being a mother and grandmother. Witty, literary, a strict grammarian, and sharp to the end, Maureen was a high school English teacher at Bay View and North Division high schools and, earlier, at Brookfield East. She was riveted by public and world affairs, and highlights of her life included years in England and South Africa working as a journalist for the Evening Mail, the Guardian and Gazette, and the New York Times. Maureen had a strong sense of right and wrong that she shared with those closest to her. With an odds-defying iron will, Maureen fought life-threatening chronic illnesses to return year after year to "Nana's Retreat," an idyllic hideaway in the Wisconsin Northwoods. Many will remember her zany sense of humor and unconventional interests, including falconry, fencing, and amber beer. She will be deeply missed and forever on our minds and in our hearts.
Her family wishes to thank the staff at Davita Bluemound, Oak Park Place Wauwatosa, and Brookdale Brookfield for their dedication and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory could be sent to the Wisconsin Humane Society.
Full visitation and service details will be forthcoming.
