He was predeceased by: his parents, Sylvester and Frances; and his siblings, Robert and Anne Gotzler. He is survived by: his spouse Bobbie O'Hara Schmitt; his children, Maria-Kristina Schmitt of Wauwatosa, WI, Tara Elizabeth Schmitt of Shaker Heights, OH, Morfar of Ian Patrick, Trevor Nathaniel Schmitt-Ernst, Julia Grace and Catherine Lily Schmitt-Palumbo; his sons-in-law, Jarrett Ernst and Chris Palumbo; and his nieces and nephews, Karen, Steve, John, Tom, Donna (Goetze), Mike and Amy Gotzler.
A resident of St. John's on the Lake, John could be found during the pandemic getting his regular exercise by walking through the halls, and he continued to lead a group reflecting on the Sunday readings with a small stack of his well-worn commentaries at the ready.
