He was predeceased by: his parents, John Bretl and Frances Bretl (Kumbera); his wife JoAnn Kramm; his stepgreat-grandson Kolton Kramm; and his siblings, Clara Tarnowski (Alex), Joseph Bretl (Ramona), Eleanor Bretl, Marie Steininger, Patricia Sala (Lloyd), Donald Bretl and Elizabeth Bretl.

He is survived by: his children, Lee Bretl (Pam) of Palatine, IL, Penny Oleszczuk (Bruce) of Beaverton, OR, Thomas Bretl (Cindy), Jane Brzezinski (Tim), Kronenwetter and Mike Bretl (Bobbie) of Holly Springs, NC; and his stepsons, Dennis Kramm (Barbara) and Randy Kramm (Mary). He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
