He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Daniel H. Gitzel and Barbara Gitzel (Myers); his wife Linda Gitzel (Moldenhauer); his children, Jessica Schultz (Travis), Travis Gitzel (Mercedes) and Tyler Gitzel (Rachel); his grandchildren, Tanner, Landon, Ryden, Grayson Schultz, Alexis Beaudry (Tanner), Mercedes Gitzel, Leah Kissinger, Elias, Kaidan and Liara Gitzel; his great grandchild Maisyn Beaudry; his siblings, Marjorie Zielicke (Leslie), Phyllis Riel, Barbara Schultz (Jim), Mark Gitzel (Paula) and Christopher Gitzel (Taylor); his parents-in-law, Irvin and Marilyn Moldenhauer (Pat); and his brother-in-law Steve Riel. He was also cherished by many nieces and nephews.

He donated a lot of time serving on the board for his church and Thrivent Financial.

“We knew Dan and his lovely wife, Linda, through our daughters. Dan was always friendly and he enjoyed guiding and helping kids. He helped Jackie get into the weekly newspaper deliveries as a ten year old. It sparked a desire to work hard and pay dues back to society. We appreciated Dan's smile and desire to help people be their best. We will miss you, Dan. The same age as Dan, 64, my husband passed from cancer Easter of this year. Linda is going to be strong for her family. Best wishes.”
